Comments: Why is "Metropolis" on your 100 greatest films list? It may or may not deserve to be, but it certainly appears to be the only foreign movie listed. Are you including foreign silents or not? Thanks, Ben

Comments: If you want to see a scene that will knock your socks off, watch the bank heist that takes place in downtown LA in Michael Mann's "Heat". It is the greatest bank robbery you will ever see. I promise! One of the all-time great moments in film.

Comments: Your website is the best. This is where I can find all the Greatest hits, but anyway I would not blame anyone for not coming here because some people might not be into movies. I found lots and lots of movies that I was looking for on here. Thank you for all the greatest films at filmsite. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. Out of all of my favorite sites you're the best. Give me an F*I*L*M*S*I*T*E*

Comments: First time on this site, so I will withhold all remarks until I am able to really get a better study of the site. I know that there are a lot of famous stars and movies, which I want to see, and read about and then I will make my remarks. Thank you.

Comments: My GOSH!!! How in the world did I NOT know of this place ?! I'm from Malaysia in South East Asia.I'm a fan of films --classic and all-- and this site is the best site in the WWW!!! Just for fun I tried a search on 'MALAYA" ( the old name for my country) AND surprise of surprises there IS a film named "MALAYA" released in 1949 --- which I guess even the people in Malaysia don't know exists! Anyway, a million thanks to the WASHINGTON POST --for it was through a link from that paper's Internet edition that I "got on". Thanks for a wonderful site.

Name: Luke - March 17, 2000

Comments: I always find it strange that few comedies show up on "top 100" lists. Why is that? Are there just not that many good comedies? Are that not serious enough to be considered great movies? What about A Fish Called Wanda? I almost peed my pants watching that movie for the first time, on numerous occassions. It was great film making, but never any mention, Por que?

Name: Jerry Martini - March 11, 2000

Comments: Just found the site and am having great fun with it. So what gives me the right to complain? I'm a movie buff and that's what movie buffs do best. So where is Leo McCarey on the director's list? And does anyone remember Lionel Barrymore and Bobs Watson in "On Borrowed Time"?

Name: Johnny Boy - March 11, 2000

Comments: Your site is wonderful, with all its excellent, lengthy, illustrated reviews that I often link my pages to. If you run this all on your own I congratulate you. I don't know how you do it. I wish I knew HTML, and maybe I'll learn some day. Keep up the oustanding work.

Name: Faye - March 06, 2000

Comments: Oh my gosh am I glad I found your website!!!! I've always been a movie freak, but now I can read a little bit about some of the great films I've neglected to see. The only other thing I have to say is "Singin in the Rain" rocks and Gene Kelly will always be the best dancer who ever lived. Long live musicals :).

Name: Vincent Alvaro - March 05, 2000

Comments: I happened to stumble on this site by accident, but I quickly bookmarked it as soon as I realised what a treasure I had found. An absolutely wonderful site with an abundance of useful and joyous film information. I can't get enough of it. I thought I would send a note, whilst waiting for my "Citizen Kane" information to print. Keep up the terrific work.

Name: Janet Scholl - March 05, 2000

Comments: I read about this site in a Roger Ebert article. I am truly amazed at the wealth of material you have. My favorite movie would not make many all time greatest list, but I truly feel good when watching it. It is Finian's Rainbow. Fred Astaire, singing, dancing, magic-what more could you ask for? If I could have given an award to an actor in the last 25 years who I felt was robbed, it would be to Karen Allen in Raiders of the Lost Ark. She blew every one away that year and still awes me all these years later.

Name: Paul Williams - February 27, 2000

Comments: Outstanding oldman, outstanding. I loved Tim Dirks' material on "The Magnificent Ambersons". I am a 23 year old undergraduate student at the University of Alberta currently completing a major in Psychology and a minor in Film Studies and I think this site is really cool. It is too bad though that you're only concerned with American films but that's no matter because it's one of the most well thought out movie sites I've ever seen. If I may suggest that you include more still frames of Great Films so that users may select them as wallpaper for their desktops, I believe this would make your great site better. Well Done.

Name: Evan C. Noreen - February 24, 2000

Comments: In the distant future, I eagerly intend on directing, writing, and possibly acting in motion pictures. This website has given me more information about the medium than any other I've been to. The astonishing facts and references blow my mind.

Name: Marcelo - February 23, 2000

Comments: I am a film history teacher at the Art Institute of Houston, and I have found your site very useful in compiling materials for my classes. I especially liked your Film Noir link. In the future, could you include some historical perspective of international films, especially those of France, Italy, Germany, Japan, and England? There are some very significant artists and movements from the int'l arena; and I think they would round out this site.

Name: Farooq Siyal - February 20, 2000

Comments: The Godfather part I - I thank you for the wonderful 17 page version of the Godfather part I which I have briefly read and I found that the scene in which Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) is about to shoot two enemies in a hotel, he comes out of the bathroom. I think the sound is not of the subway train, in my opinion it is a sound of the flash which you use to clean the dirt. Well I may be wrong or may be I have to see the movie for the 17th time again. Thanks. Farooq

Name: Assier Angelique - February 17, 2000
Location: St Jean de Maurienne,      FRANCE

Comments: I'm French and I'm 17. I want to say that your site is a very great site. I think it's important today to see very good films and have a site for them. In my opinion, the films produced today are not good, in fact when we know of "Rear Window", "Indiscreet"... it is very difficult to see good films like them today. Congratulations for your site. Angelique

Name: Koenraad - February 14, 2000

Comments: It is a great site, very informative. But I notice that a great film, GLORY it has been under rated. There is no description or major commentaries of this incredible film. One of the best on the genre of the American Civil War.

Comments: I love old musicals! I'm only 13 and any time I can get my hands on an old movie I will. My favorites are The Wizard Of Oz, Singin' in the Rain, and the Sound of Music! Thanks so much for letting me find out more about them! I LOVE this site! Danielle

Comments: I was doing a project on World War II's effect on the film industry and your web site was the only place where I found a multitude of information and pictures. Other places just gave me about three sentences of info and a picture if I was lucky. Thanks.

Name: Juan - January 23, 2000

Comments: Why not add a new list - 100 great forgotten/unknown films? Pick a bunch of obscure yet fantastic movies. The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, The Barefoot Contessa, etc. Great site

Comments: What a beautiful site. I could sit here for hours and read the reviews! You're killing my time with the kids!

Name: Vlad B - January 18, 2000

Comments: An excellent resource, which I'm glad you frequently update. One note, though: your descriptions of most films are more like summaries/synopses rather than reviews in a sense of critical analysis. Maybe you shouldn't call them "reviews"...

Comments: Nice site, well laid out, easy to navigate. Very informational.

Name: Knut Brockmann - January 15, 2000

Comments: As a young film critic and student of film science I am just amazed. Your texts are not only long, but also very interesting. I was searching for some lines on "Double Indemnity" and "Body Heat" when I first encountered your page. I will recommend your page to my fellow students and I will add a link on my tiny site. Until then I just want to say, I will have to spend a long time, reading and working with your material.

Name: Chase Handley - January 08, 2000

Comments: Terrific site! I love the additional comments on each of your Top 200 films. But why did you replace "Dirty Harry," "The Band Wagon," and "In a Lonely Place" (especially in favor of conventional films like "Murder, My Sweet")? And why not add some of these greats: Howard Hawks' "Only Angels Have Wings" (1939), "Point Blank" (1967), Robert Altman's "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" (1971), "Young Frankenstein" (1974),"Shampoo" (1975), and "Fargo" (1996)? Regardless, this site is the best around.

Name: Hmmm - January 06, 2000
Location: Stockholm,      SWEDEN

Comments: I think many of these old (-1960) movies which are high rated on your top 100 list aren't worth such a good rating. Maybe these movies were good when they were new. But nowadays there aren't many people (who aren't very old or are film-critic wannabes) that think they are that good. People just think they are good because of the reputation. Who decides what is a good film? A film-critic who thinks he knows better than all other people? No. The best film is of course the movie that the people have voted for the best.

Name: Marty - January 05, 2000
Location: Boston, MA     USA

Comments: Yo, this site is good. However, "Superman" doesn't even make the top 200 films of all time? Or even, "Superman II"? Roger Ebert, whom I consider the smartest critic out there (Leonard Maltin is fair, but nowhere near the writing ability, clarity, and intelligence of Ebert), gave both these films the highest marking of 4 stars. These were excellent films, written by the same person who wrote "The Godfather," Mario Puzo. I seriously think you should find someplace to add that in the top 100 or at least top 200. And, one more thing. "A Clockwork Orange" in the top 200? That movie is one of the absolute best (and Kubrick's best - better than 2001) of all time. That deserves to be at least number 50 on your list. And, Rob Reiner and Robert Redford are not on your list for best directors? Robert Redford directed "Ordinary People" (wait, where is that Best Picture on your list), among his other greats, and that alone deserves to put him on the list. And, Reiner directed "Stand By Me," (where's that on your list?) and that alone too deserves to put him on the list. Oh yes...WHERE'S "IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT"???!! Hello, think, you people! Think! That is one of the absolute best American films! Okay, that is all I can think of right now. Good site. Needs improvment.

Comments: I love movies and this is the ultimate site for film lovers. I only wish you had a search page so a person could find specific stars and their movies. That is the only flaw of this extensive site. I can tell a lot of work and research has gone in this site.

Comments: A wonderful site. I have never seen a better source for American movies, nor a more complete one. The movie summaries alone are mindboggling in their depth and introspection, and the sheer volume of movies listed is unbelievable. Excellent work.

Comments: Well Mr. Dirks, you've done an amazing job. It must have taken a lot of time and effort to do it. I would like to thank you for this wonderful site, which, as a fan of great cinema, I now consider indispensable. Your film summaries are very helpful when I'm trying to think of another movie to watch. The site is marvelous, and I will continue to be a visitor. Thank you.

Name: Marco - December 02, 1999

Comments: Great site but American-oriented (where are the great Italian and French movies?). I think that 'Raging Bull' is the best Martin Scorsese movie (followed by 'Taxi Driver', 'Goodfellas', and 'Casino. that is vastly overrated.) I think you did a brilliant job but you just have to watch more European movies.

Name: Terrence - November 30, 1999

Comments: Well, I thought I knew all the good movie sites. I was wrong. I stumbled across your site and was very pleased. You've put a great deal of effort into your site and it shows. A definite bookmark. No, I'll go one up -- I'm adding your site to my links page. A site like yours should get exposure. Keep up the great work.

Name: Jonas Cukierman - November 08, 1999
Location: Chicago, IL     USA

Comments: I am not sure how you base your decisions or how you determine which are the best films of each decade. But may I suggest that you include PATTON in the 70's. As well as 2001: A Space Odyssey for the 60's. To deny these films as some of the best of the aforementioned decades is to commit the greatest sin against the gods of celluloid.

Name: Jelena Jovanovic - November 03, 1999
Location: Sydney, NSW     AUSTRALIA

Comments: I'm very glad to at last find a film site well worth the time browsing through. The extensive film archive is a movie buff's dream and I am very glad to find such film directors as Orson Welles, Stanley Kubrick, D.W. Grffith, Frank Capra (just to name a few) so highly honoured here. This site offers everything you could ever want to find about classic and artistic movies. Definitely the best film site I have seen in a long time.

Name: Scott - November 03, 1999
Location: Arbroath, Angus     SCOTLAND

Comments: A fantastic site. I spent 4 hours browsing through the various pages. It was particularly heart-warming to find a site that caters for the golden era of Hollywood. My only request would be to see "Kiss of Death" (the version with Victor Mature and Richard Widmark) included in the "200 Greatest". Keep up the good work.

Name: David Sessions - November 03, 1999

Comments: Wow...wow...wow! This is an awesome site. As a movie-addicted human being I can only say this: keep up the good work. And add some information about non-Hollywood films. So I can get myself an indigestion.

Location: Cincinnati, OH     USA

Comments: Mr. Dirks, Thank you so much for one of the best film sites I've found. I thoroughly enjoy the articles on genres and the in-depth descriptions of films. And I have used your suggestions numerous times for movie rental ideas. Thanks to you I've seen some real gems lately that I might otherwise never have ventured toward--The Manchurian Candidate, Chinatown, Modern Times, and others. Excellent work!

Name: Chase Handley - October 23, 1999
Location: LA     USA

Comments: It's great to be back! One thing, where are The Lady from Shanghai (1948) and McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971) on your second hundred? The Lady From Shanghai may be difficult to follow (studio boss Harry Cohn once offered a reward to anyone who could explain it to him), but the story has a wonderful tongue and cheek quality and Welles offers a variety of dazzling tricks (not least of which is the expressionistic Hall Of Mirrors finale). The film offers a wonderful commentary on Welles' marriage to Rita Hayworth; another memorable gem from Welles. McCabe and Mrs. Miller, meanwhile, turns the Western genre inside out and thereaby brings it to new life, making a hero out of a small-time hustler (Warren Beatty, in his greatest film role). These virtues are complemented by marvelous cinematography, and a wonderful performance by Julie Christie.

Comments: An interesting site. Can you do the same with British films?

Name: Gon C Curiel - October 03, 1999
Location: Mexico,      MEXICO

Comments: I simply love this site, it has inspired me a lot for my own, but I can't believe the wonderful "Viva Zapata!" is not even indexed as one of the greatest films, it is a masterpiece in every way, including one of Marlon Brando's best performances ever. Please, Mr. Dirks, index that movie, I love it as much as many people. But hey, the site is great, congratulations and keep up the good work!

Name: Blake - October 02, 1999

Comments: I noticed that in the Film Quotes Quiz, you forgot to put in what is probably one of the most famous movie quotes of our time. It is from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Dave Bowman says: "Open the pod bay doors, please Hal." Then Hal replies: "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that." How could you forget that?
